Street Fighter 6: The Iconic Fighting Saga Returns

Street Fighter 6: The Iconic Fighting Saga Returns

The king of fighting games is back and does it through the front door. ‘Street Fighter 6‘ arrives this Friday, June 2, as a video game that aims to be one of the best in 2023. All in a year where it will cross the shelves again with other ‘fightings’ such as ‘Mortal Kombat 1’ or ‘ Tekken 8’. But the Capcom title is not afraid of this; it knows it is a gem in the rough. Anyone looking for a fight will find it here.

We have been able to test the title, and we know with a good hand that fans of fighting games will be satisfied with everything that this new franchise installment offers.

After a much loved ‘Street Fighter 4’ and a spectacular and controversial ‘Street Fighter V,’ the Japanese company has found the key. Thirty-five years have passed since the first title, enough time to polish all the edges. The sixth installment represents the next evolution, one step beyond what we were used to. Addictive, frantic, and colorful gameplay always asks to press the revenge button repeatedly after a fight.

Here it does not matter if you have been playing since the first installment or if it is your first time at the controls, ‘Street Fighter 6’ has thought of all audiences and presents adapted controls: Classic, Modern, and Dynamic. Modern control is ideal for those who play this title less or for those looking for something easier. Depending on the configuration you choose, performing special attacks or flashy sequences will be more or less complicated. In fact, with the dynamic mode – only selectable in ‘versus combat’ – any combination of buttons will perform a combo.

You can smash the controller and beat your friend; it’s an option. Of course, whoever knows how to play will see the automatic combos coming and will not make things easy. Whatever player you are, you will have the option to win the ’rounds.’

Technically, the game is a spectacle. The title presents a facelift that feels great. The bet revolves around graffiti, neon, urban music, and a characteristic comic style. We have played on PlayStation 5, and the graphic jump is noticeable. All the characters —which we will talk about later— have changed, both in their movements and design, but maintaining their essence and unique characteristics. We would have liked to see what they could have done with the RE Engine if the title didn’t also come out in the old generation.

I have played the ‘remake’ of ‘The Last of Us Part I for PS5, and I am not sure it is a necessary video game.

The review of the popular title arrived on PS5 this Friday, September 2

Technically, the game is a spectacle. The title presents a facelift that feels great. The bet revolves around graffiti, neon, urban music, and a characteristic comic style. We have played on PlayStation 5, and the graphic jump is noticeable. All the characters —which we will talk about later— have changed, both in their movements and design, but maintaining their essence and unique characteristics. We would have liked to see what they could have done with the RE Engine if the title didn’t also come out in the old generation.

The graphic jump and the new style feel great to the title.

Lots to choose from

At launch, we can choose between 18 characters, the same number of fighters present at the launch of ‘Street Fighter V.’ As happens in all games of this genre, the squad will be expanded based on DLC. The first is already confirmed, which will include four characters —among them the mythical Akuma— and they will appear during the first year of the title’s life. There are familiar faces, on the campus, such as Cammy, Ryu, Chun-Li, or Guile, and six completely new characters, providing a variety that the output saga has never had. The new members are designed to offer new ways to enjoy the usual players.

New Mechanics

At a playable level, ‘Street Fighter 6’ has several new mechanics. Two are the ‘Drive Reversal’ and ‘Drive Parry.’ Both block attacks and the ‘Reversal’ allows you to counterattack. These new playable options add much depth to Zangief and E. Honda or Blanka, three heavy characters who know how to punish mistakes. Now they will be more effective against ‘zone’ characters, that is, against those who stand still in a zone and crush the opponent with ranged attacks.

Regarding the game modes, Street Fighter 6 is divided into three modalities: World Tour, Battle Hud, and Fighting Ground. Each has its options, but in the end, they are summarized in the story mode, the online section, and the classic confrontations of a fighting game.

World Tour is an interesting proposal but needs more execution.

We must be honest; we have yet to finish enthusiastic about what the story mode of ‘Street Fighter 6’ proposes. World Tour allows you to create your avatar, a character tailored to the player’s preferences. You will have all the movements of the official squad of fighters at your disposal, being able to make the combination you want between the special attacks of each other.

However, far from the potential that this arouses, the story and the settings where the action takes place muddy the experience. The narrative, under the dogma of getting stronger, is a mere excuse to present the iconic characters of the saga one after the other, such as Dalshim, Ryu, or Chun-Li. In addition, the difficulty is nonexistent; at a higher level, all you find are enemies with higher life bars, nothing that requires a bit of effort. The most interesting thing about the mode lies in the deep and detailed character creator and the thousand customization options that it offers, both visually and mechanically.

Battle Hud is the main proposition of the title, and it shows. Capcom is looking more than ever to create a game as a service. This model is a meeting point for the players, where they can play online tournaments, friendly matches, and qualifiers and even measure each other’s avatars in intense battles. All are surrounded by a lot of care and curious details for most fans of the saga. For its part, Fighting Ground brings together the modes that one can expect to find in a fighting game. Versus, arcade, training, tutorials… all together in this section.

Entering the rugged terrain that is micropayments, with this title, the players are in luck. Everything remains exclusively in the cosmetic field, so spending more money to be the best fighter in the ring will be optional.

So… Is it worth it?

If you hesitate to buy it between buying it or not, from ABC, we can say yes. Whether new to the genre or an expert, Street Fighter 6 will give you hours and hours of fun. The newly adapted controls and the variety of characters are the strong points of the title. We believe that it will become a classic of the genre. Time will give us the reason.
